Fish Day Morning – 2016

Fish Day morning sunrise by James Meyer Photography

The 2016 edition of Port Washington’s Fish Day began with a magnificent sunrise which filled and already busy marina with a warm golden glow.  Visitors from near and far flock to what is billed as the Worlds Largest One Day Outdoor Fish Fry.  The very first Fish Day, August 21, 1965 featured deep-fried fish and chips, beer and soda which is pretty much the menu for the current version of Fish Day. Enjoy the view from the marina Download…

Port Washington Marina in July

The view of the Port Washington marina from Rotary Park

I found myself out and about very early this morning.  Late last night thunderstorms pushed through the area.  When I awoke at 3am my dog, like many dogs, was panting and pacing and showing his dislike for the thunder and lightening.  By about 4am the storms had pushed out and a slow clearing of the clouds began.  I had hoped there would be breaks in the clouds at sunrise which was at 5:20am.  Shortly after 5:00am I headed to…

Strawberry Moon

Full moon arives June 20, 2016 featuring the iconic Port Washington WI lighthouse

The 2016 June full moon, also knows as the Strawberry Moon occurred on June 20th which was also the summer solstice, the longest day of the year. Moon rise was 8:37pm with sunset occurring right about the same time, at 8:36pm I choose to photograph the moonrise from the familiar surroundings of the Port Washington Marina.  Based upon the relative location of the moonrise and it’s proximity to the iconic art deco lighthouse, I knew I could get both…

Quiet Night in Coal Dock Park

Coal Dock Park Night Photography Shoot It was a warm(ish) early February night, one that cannot be spent inside doing nothing, so out I went outside looking to take some photos. I headed to Coal Dock Park, in my hometown Port Washington. The wind was calm. The waves were gently rolling,  Geese were honking and the occasional fish slapped the calm surface of Lake Michigan.  Coal Dock Park is a relatively new park which projects from the shoreline into…

Sunrise at Negative Six

Sunrise January 18 2016 by James Meyer Photography

Wow!  Arctic Steam Fog! That about sums up the sunrise on the Port Washington, WI. breakwater this morning.  The cold, arctic air pushed the temperatures well below zero.  At those temperatures the “steam fog” rising from the lake is really thick.  As easy as it might be to enjoy from the comfort of a warm vehicle, nothing, in my opinion, compares to the experience of being “out there in the elements”. The breakwater is composed of several segments.  The…

On The Edge

On The Edge by James Meyer Photography in Port Washington

“On the Edge” North Beach, Port Washington, WI., January 15, 2016 I call this shoot “On the Edge” as I was literally on the edge of Lake Michigan for all these shots.  At one point when some higher waves reached up and grabbed me.  On the Edge also refers the natural elements of these images.  The sea and land meet.  Temperatures rise and dive, dancing above and below the freezing mark. Morning Magic

Magical morning in the Port Washington Marina

Sunrise. Magical. Lasting only a short while each cloudless day, if we’re lucky we are able to soak in the magic of the days beginning. I find myself having the good fortune of living just moments away from the waters edge in Port Washington, WI., where, we have the perfect combination for fantastic sunrises.  We have the sun.  We have clean air.  We have a large body of water.  We have a quaint marina.  The sum of these individual…

Port Washington West Slip

The West Slip in Port Washington WI is one of my favorite places to shoot a sunrise. I like using the framing of the buildings in the composition of the shot. Fortunately, the buildings also provide a good wind break which is handy on chilly mornings.  This particular morning it was about 17 degrees at sunrise but the sunrise was just too beautiful and I had to venture out and catch it. Shop my gallery!

USS Milwaukee Visits Port Washington WI

The USS Milwaukee visited just outside the Port Washington WI breakwater on a beautiful Sunday morning in mid-November 2015. The date was November 15, 2015 at 10am. Coal Dock Park was jam packed with people eager to get a few minute glimpse while she slowed down to salute just outside the harbor. While the USS Milwaukee passed by, a 21 gun salute rang out, followed by a magical rendition of Taps. From Port Washington, the USS Milwaukee headed on…

Short Walk to Blue Bridge

On this morning the clouds were hanging low on Lake Michigan, creating what I like to call “drama”.  As a landscape photographer (primarily) I’m always on the lookout for contrast of lights and dark and thus my favorite times to shoot are dawn, dusk(ish). I say ish to dusk because running into blue hour and shooting during the period shortly after sunset is often times magical. This morning I stopped in the Port Washington marina. From the parking lot…
