South Beach Black and White

Power Plant in Wisconsin

Winter Beach in Port Washington Wisconsin by James Meyer Photography It finally warmed up, in a manner of speaking, to a delightful 20 degrees.  After many days of temperatures in the single digits and wind chills well below zero, 20 degrees with no wind felt almost balmy, almost.  What do you do in warm weather?  That’s right, head to the beach. This morning at South Beach in Port Washington, Wisconsin, the lake was absolutely still.  Spooky still.  No waves,…

Sunrise at Negative Six

Sunrise January 18 2016 by James Meyer Photography

Wow!  Arctic Steam Fog! That about sums up the sunrise on the Port Washington, WI. breakwater this morning.  The cold, arctic air pushed the temperatures well below zero.  At those temperatures the “steam fog” rising from the lake is really thick.  As easy as it might be to enjoy from the comfort of a warm vehicle, nothing, in my opinion, compares to the experience of being “out there in the elements”. The breakwater is composed of several segments.  The…

On The Edge

On The Edge by James Meyer Photography in Port Washington

“On the Edge” North Beach, Port Washington, WI., January 15, 2016 I call this shoot “On the Edge” as I was literally on the edge of Lake Michigan for all these shots.  At one point when some higher waves reached up and grabbed me.  On the Edge also refers the natural elements of these images.  The sea and land meet.  Temperatures rise and dive, dancing above and below the freezing mark. Morning Magic

Magical morning in the Port Washington Marina

Sunrise. Magical. Lasting only a short while each cloudless day, if we’re lucky we are able to soak in the magic of the days beginning. I find myself having the good fortune of living just moments away from the waters edge in Port Washington, WI., where, we have the perfect combination for fantastic sunrises.  We have the sun.  We have clean air.  We have a large body of water.  We have a quaint marina.  The sum of these individual…

Steam Fog in Port Washington WI

Steam Fog in Port Washington WI by James Meyer Photography

It was a bitterly cold morning on January 12, 2016 which, when dressed warmly, with plenty of layers, it’s a perfect time to take great photos of “Steam Fog”.  The warmer water creates evaporation and steam; also known as “sea smoke” or “steam fog”.  These steam fog images are from the Port Washington, WI. breakwater. The wind was blowing pretty good but I know a spot below the stairs along the breakwater that provides some protection from the sub-zero…

Port Washington West Slip

The West Slip in Port Washington WI is one of my favorite places to shoot a sunrise. I like using the framing of the buildings in the composition of the shot. Fortunately, the buildings also provide a good wind break which is handy on chilly mornings.  This particular morning it was about 17 degrees at sunrise but the sunrise was just too beautiful and I had to venture out and catch it. Hank Aaron State Trail Downtown Milwaukee

Pier Light and lighthouse in Milwaukee WI harbor

The Hank Aaron State Trail is a popular and fantastic public walkway that follows the downtown Milwaukee lakefront, near the Henry W Maier Festival Park west past Miller Park. In fact, you can see many important Milwaukee landmarks along it’s 12-mile route. I “discovered” the trail section along the Milwaukee lakefront on New Years Day, 2016.  I actually felt quite foolish when seeing how simple the access was and how magnificent the views right along the lakefront.  Having lived…
