Sunrise In the Beginning

In the Beginning by James Meyer Photography

Sunrise, Halloween morning, October 31, 2016 in Port Washington, WI, more specifically, Veterans Memorial Park. I call this image, “In the Beginning” for several reasons.  Sunrise marks the beginning of a new day.  But this particular location also boasts a outlet of some type of water pipe which dispatches rain water into the lake.  I’m not really sure about the details but it makes a great location to make images of Lake Michigan, the Port Washington lighthouse. Port Washington Marina in July

The view of the Port Washington marina from Rotary Park

I found myself out and about very early this morning.  Late last night thunderstorms pushed through the area.  When I awoke at 3am my dog, like many dogs, was panting and pacing and showing his dislike for the thunder and lightening.  By about 4am the storms had pushed out and a slow clearing of the clouds began.  I had hoped there would be breaks in the clouds at sunrise which was at 5:20am.  Shortly after 5:00am I headed to…

Strawberry Moon

Full moon arives June 20, 2016 featuring the iconic Port Washington WI lighthouse

The 2016 June full moon, also knows as the Strawberry Moon occurred on June 20th which was also the summer solstice, the longest day of the year. Moon rise was 8:37pm with sunset occurring right about the same time, at 8:36pm I choose to photograph the moonrise from the familiar surroundings of the Port Washington Marina.  Based upon the relative location of the moonrise and it’s proximity to the iconic art deco lighthouse, I knew I could get both…

Sheboygan Waterfront

Sheboygan WI lighthouse

Sheboygan Wisconsin is knows as “the spirit on the lake”. Sheboygan is a Lake Michigan coastal city located just about half-way between Milwaukee and Green Bay WI.  Each are about 60 miles away, Milwaukee to the south, Green Bay to the north.  Being a city on the Lake Michigan shoreline, of course the harbor area is a main attraction.  The Harbor Centre Marina is regarded by boaters as one of the finest full service marinas on the western shores…

Huge Waves on Lake Michigan

Huge waves on Lake Michigan by James Meyer

Huge waves on Lake Michigan were pounding the breakwater in Port Washington WI. On a late February day a blizzard hit the eastern side of Lake Michigan bringing snow to Michigan, Ohio, Indiana and Illinois.  Wisconsin was on the northern and westerly edge of the blizzard and escaped the snow.  Winds were very strong out of the northeast gusting into the 45-50pmg range for much of the day. These winds whipped Lake Michigan into a frothing frenzy, which crashed…

Sunrise at Negative Six

Sunrise January 18 2016 by James Meyer Photography

Wow!  Arctic Steam Fog! That about sums up the sunrise on the Port Washington, WI. breakwater this morning.  The cold, arctic air pushed the temperatures well below zero.  At those temperatures the “steam fog” rising from the lake is really thick.  As easy as it might be to enjoy from the comfort of a warm vehicle, nothing, in my opinion, compares to the experience of being “out there in the elements”. The breakwater is composed of several segments.  The…

On The Edge

On The Edge by James Meyer Photography in Port Washington

“On the Edge” North Beach, Port Washington, WI., January 15, 2016 I call this shoot “On the Edge” as I was literally on the edge of Lake Michigan for all these shots.  At one point when some higher waves reached up and grabbed me.  On the Edge also refers the natural elements of these images.  The sea and land meet.  Temperatures rise and dive, dancing above and below the freezing mark. November Sunrise in Port Washington

Sunrise, each and every one of them is special.  Add the element of water, clouds, fog and you have something extra special.  It’s been a while since I’ve taken sunrise photos on the breakwater in Port Washington, WI.  On this particular November morning, the air temperature was 16 degrees which, when it’s that cold, if the wind is low, a gentle fog rises from Lake Michigan’s warmer waters. Prints are available.  Please click here for sizes and pricing.

Sunrise in Rotary Park

The challenge I gave myself this morning was to photograph a beautiful sunrise and presenting it in as many different ways I could.  I shot from various locations in Rotary Park to capture different elements and composition. Short Walk to Blue Bridge

On this morning the clouds were hanging low on Lake Michigan, creating what I like to call “drama”.  As a landscape photographer (primarily) I’m always on the lookout for contrast of lights and dark and thus my favorite times to shoot are dawn, dusk(ish). I say ish to dusk because running into blue hour and shooting during the period shortly after sunset is often times magical. This morning I stopped in the Port Washington marina. From the parking lot…
